Hall Of Nemeses

These are the sports figures who through the years have earned my scorn for a variety of reasons- some legit, some simply due to an over-emotional response to disappointment.

This tremendous underachiever was drafted by the Chicago Bears with the 11th overall pick in the 1994 Draft. After five seasons of watching the college linebacker turned defensive end continually try to rush the passer, even on running plays, the Cleveland Browns graciously selected him in the 1999 expansion draft and he became someone else's problem. He's on this list because even a kid who never played a down of organized football could tell he had no idea what he was doing, so why on Earth did we pick him 11th overall? Passing up players like Aaron Glenn, Aaron Taylor, Todd Stuessie, Isaac Bruce, and Larry Allen??

Ah, where would the Chicago Bears be without the Michael and Virginia McCaskey? Probably three Super Bowl's richer. Honestly, there's no way of telling that, but it does seem like there has been one bad move after another with the front office of my beloved teams. It wasn't until Michael was maneuvered out of control and Ted Phillips hired that the Bears returned to somewhat competitive football. She's Papa Bear's daughter, but she is the equivalent of Captain Smith on the Titanic in my book.

Keith Smart

Indiana Hoosier Smart hit the championship winning shot to defeat my beloved Syracuse Orange (Orangemen at the time) in the 1987 National Championship Game. He is now the head coach of the Golden State Warriors. When watching, I hope he trips and falls while walking the sidelines.

Carlos Beltran

In the Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, the New York Mets trailed the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth. Jose Valentin and Endy Chavez singled. Later, a two-out walk to Paul LoDuca brought Beltran up with the bases loaded. How did the big money free agent respond? By striking out on three pitches, looking at the last one. Couple that with the recent injuries and how the Mets completely fell out of contention once he returned to the lineup last year and Mr. Beltran has a big hole to dig out of.
